College Planning Timeline for Seniors


Print this page and use as a checklist during the school year.


SEPTEMBER

bullet

Use Naviance to get college information, update resume, find dates for college visits, etc.

bullet

Turn in Blue Form to Mr. Ragan ASAP.

bullet

Request applications and brochures from your target colleges.

bullet

Set up a budget for college application costs.

bullet

Get your applications in order by creating files for your target schools. Make a list of application requirements (essay, transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc.) and deadlines for each.

bullet

Register for September or October SAT or ACT testing.

bullet

Submit the CSS Financial Aid Profile for schools requiring it.

bullet

Attend Senior Parent Meeting regarding college admissions on September 26th, 7:00 pm, Marist Library.
 

OCTOBER
 

bullet

Attend college visitations in the Counseling Office. Updated visitation dates are posted on the Counseling Office bulletin board and on Naviance.

bullet

Meet with your school counselor, if you haven’t already, to review college lists and graduation requirements.

bullet

Register for October or November SAT or ACT testing.

bullet

Talk to your parents about college costs. Decide how much you can afford and explore your options for funding.

bullet

Start applying for scholarships.

bullet

Send in early decision or early action applications.
 

NOVEMBER
 

bullet

If you are applying for early action or early decision, get your application in by November 1, 2007.

bullet

If you are applying for University of California at ???? or California State University at ????, send in your application as early in the month as possible.

bullet

You may want to keep copies of all applications you send out.

bullet

Continue your scholarship search.
 

DECEMBER
 

bullet

Attend the Financial Aid Night scheduled for December 5, 2007.

bullet

Work on college applications. Many applications are due this month or in early January.

bullet

Start gathering materials and financial records for the FAFSA.

bullet

Keep your grades up. Colleges will look at semester and year end grades.

bullet

Continue your scholarship search. Get the applications in on time.
 

JANUARY
 

bullet

File the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as soon as possible after January 1, 2008.

bullet

Check with your prospective colleges about additional financial aid application forms and requirements. Continue your scholarship search.
 

FEBRUARY
 

bullet

Review the SAR (Student Aid Report) to make sure the information is correct. You should receive it four to six weeks after you submit your FAFSA.

bullet

Submit mid-year reports to your school counselor.

bullet

Start writing thank you notes to college representatives who may have gone out of their way to help you.

bullet

Continue your scholarship search.
 

MARCH-APRIL
 

bullet

Start checking the mail for admissions letters and financial aid awards.

bullet

If wait-listed, notify the admissions office if you are still interested.

bullet

Plan your summer job, internship, or other opportunities for enrichment.

bullet

Time for a decision! Most schools ask that you choose your school by May 1.

bullet

Make sure you also tell your school counselor what college you decided to attend.

bullet

Register for AP tests.

bullet

Many scholarship applications are due during the spring.

bullet

Submit application to a community college if that is where you decided to go.

bullet

Research information regarding their orientation dates.
 

MAY
 

bullet

Notify your school counselor of any scholarships you have received.

bullet

Notify (in writing) the schools you have decided not to attend.

bullet

Make sure you have received the necessary forms for housing, health insurance, financial aid, etc.

bullet

Pursue additional student loan options if necessary.

bullet

Notify colleges of any private scholarship awards.

bullet

Mail in deposit to ONE college by their due date.

bullet

Sign and return the financial award letter if you accept the offer.
 

JUNE-AUGUST
 

bullet

Request your official final transcript be sent to your new school.

bullet

Research banking options near your college.

bullet

Double check any final deadlines for housing, financial aid, etc.

bullet

Set up projected first-year college budget.

bullet

Attend all advising days, open houses, orientation programs that are offered by your college.

bullet

Send thank you notes for any scholarships you have received.
