Science Department;
Assistant Volleyball Coach

I grew up in Eugene and was raised Catholic; I knew of Marist, but did not attend school here. So when I was looking for jobs, I just happened to remember Marist and applied (Or it was God's guidance? You make the call.)  Fortuitously, they had a science position open and were willing to let a first year teacher take the reins! I didn't know at the time that I had found my life's calling of teaching physical sciences and coaching volleyball in a Catholic setting.

I truly enjoy the spiritual nature of Catholic Education and for this reason I co-moderate the junior encounter retreats as well as the liturgical music group, Proclaim! This is where one of my largest passions shows: music. Included in this passion is a lot of composing of mostly spiritual and worship-style music. Since I have been a church musician for many years, I recently branched out to singing with the Eugene Symphony Chorus with Marist instructor Erica Gingerich.

In my free time away from these two parts of my life, I also spend much time outside gardening, riding my bicycle, playing competitive and recreational volleyball and have been known to go for a jog.

My philosophy of education is that if you are not enjoying the class, you will not remember the material. This is not to say that we don't work hard, but why does learning always have to be hard work? I focus on what helps students to remember what they learn and much of that comes from my zeal for what I teach, especially science. Part of this is teaching more than just the content; I teach how to learn, how to be resourceful and attempt to foster a love of learning that goes beyond what is needed to pass a test and on to what is practical and what makes the student a better person and better member of society.
